Test of Semantic Reasoning (TOSR) —Extra Forms (25 forms)

The TOSR is a standardized vocabulary assessment for children and adolescents ages 7 through 17. It measures semantic reasoning—the process of learning and retrieving new words by analyzing multiple images that convey different contexts of a word’s meaning.

Unlike expressive vocabulary tests, the TOSR evaluates both breadth (the number of words known) and depth (the richness of semantic understanding for each word) without taxing expressive language skills. This makes it especially useful when assessing children with possible language or literacy deficits. Breadth is tied to early decoding skills, while depth supports later reading comprehension.

Abilities Assessed (CHC Theory of Cognitive Abilities)

  • Lexical Knowledge (VL): Understanding vocabulary in terms of correct word meanings

  • Induction (I): Identifying the underlying characteristic that governs a set of materials or problems

  • General Sequential Reasoning (RG): Applying rules, premises, or conditions to solve novel problems

  • Format: Picture-based assessment with simple administration

  • Time: Untimed; typically completed in about 20 minutes

  • Adaptive Design: Age-based starting points and ceilings ensure only the critical range of items is given

  • Scoring: Quick and straightforward, usually less than 5 minutes

  • Results: Raw scores reported as standard scores, percentile ranks, and age equivalents

  • Norming Sample: 1,117 individuals ages 7–17, nationally representative and including students with learning disabilities, language impairments, ADHD, and autism
